THE UGLY GIRLFRIEND by Latrivia S. Nelson

The Ugly GirlfriendThe Ugly Girlfriend by Latrivia S. Nelson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was a quick read, but sweet in its way. I can identify with LaToya in a lot of ways. Having been small all my life, I'm am now overweight due to menopause and aging. And I can see how putting up walls with people can protect you from getting hurt. Basically rejecting them before they can reject you.

Angela was the worst kinds of friends. Basically telling LaToya that Mitch, a white man, is only experimenting with her and that eventually she will be alone again when he has enough and leaves her. She's not in her relationship. She's not even asked how their relationship is. She just assumes that because LaToya isn't think and light skinned, no one could possibly be interested in her. I've been there. I've had the same thing happen to me about my skin color.

I didn't like that because LaToya was a size 14 and dark skinned she was considered "ugly," or that her friends would ever let anyone refer to her as such. It's just saddening. But I know things like that do happen.

I think that Mitch was interested in LaToya to begin with, but the fact that she was able to bring his son out of his shell and that he liked her, made her that much more attractive to him. Children can smell bologna from a mile away and the fact that she brings him around quickly was amazing.

I liked this story. It was too short. I would have liked more in the story, but it worked for what it was.
