3.5 Ham-tastic Stars

I must start out saying I love everything Kristen Ashely, but this book was much tamer than most of her other books.

Graham "Ham" Reece, whom we first meet in, The 'Burg series, For You returns to Gnaw Bone, Colorado to connect with Zara Cinders.

In the three years since Zara last saw Ham, and told him she would no longer be able to see him again, things haven’t gone well for her. She’s divorced, losing her home and her business. But when she watches a news report that Ham was a target of a serial killer out to kill anyone romantically connect to February Owens, she can’t stop herself from calling to check up on him. This end in disaster with an argument between the two, the first they’ve ever had, and Ham saying some pretty nasty things.

Jump forward a few months and Ham has been made aware of Zara’s circumstances and he’s there to protect and care for her, although under the guise of being friends.

Zara knows this is a bad idea, but sees it as a chance to get back on her feet, so she takes Ham up on the offer to move in with him and work for him at The Dog (local bar), which he is now managing.

Ham is there to make sure Zara is okay, but to find a way to get back what he lost by walking away from her three years ago.

Through this all, Zara’s family issues weigh on her and the whole town, along with Ham, rally around her to protect and support her.

This is a lovely story. As I said before, much tamer than other KA stories, but I still liked it. I liked Ham most of all. He messed up with her, though he wasn’t emotionally in the place to be there for her when he should have almost 10 years ago when they first got together, but he realized his mistake when he lost Feb and almost was killed by Lowe, and he’s back in Gnaw Bone (as he says “I never go back.”) to make sure he doesn’t lose out with Zara.

I also felt, like Zara, she may have been second choice to Feb. But his actions soon showed that she was just the catalyst to him realizing what he’d lost by walking away from Zara, too many times.

There are events that happened that, I won’t give away, but that were so sweet that I just melted when reading.

Again, Kristen has written an amazing story of love, almost lost, and finding your way home to happy.
